From EMI Training Participant to Trainer: My Career Path

I am Vilen Khachatryan – Ph.D in Economics, author of five monographs (including one in English), 40 scientific articles, and one methodological work.

 

Since 2018, I have been the head of the “Management” chair at the Public Administration Academy of the Republic of Armenia.

 

When I first heard about the EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) pilot training, I was intrigued. The idea of enhancing my teaching skills while learning to effectively use English in my lectures was too good to pass up. As a participant in the very first EMI pilot training, I eagerly absorbed all the insights and techniques shared during the sessions. I diligently practiced, reflecting on my own teaching methods and gradually integrating what I learned.

 

It was also quite fascinating to adapt the experience of teaching in Armenian to fit within the framework of English teaching methods. While I did have some experience teaching in English, I recognized the necessity to enhance my approach both methodologically and conceptually. This adaptation required a deep understanding of the nuances and intricacies of both languages and teaching systems. By integrating Armenian teaching practices with English pedagogical methods, I aimed to create a more effective and comprehensive educational experience. The process involved not only refining my teaching techniques but also developing a more robust conceptual framework to support students’ learning journeys.

 

The training was transformative. Not only did it improve my language proficiency, but it also reshaped my entire approach to teaching.

 

Then came the second piloting of the SMARTI EMI project. Given my newfound expertise and the improvements I had made, I was invited to become a lecturer for the next group of the SMARTI EMI project participants. Stepping into this role was a thrilling and humbling experience. I went from being a learner to a mentor, sharing the very strategies and knowledge that had so profoundly impacted my own teaching. Seeing new participants embark on the same journey I had taken and witnessing their growth was incredibly rewarding. My journey from participant to lecturer in the EMI pilot training not only enriched my professional skills but also deepened my commitment to fostering an engaging and effective learning environment.
